On July 26, 2010, Baby Matters LLC, issued a recall of their Nap Nanny portable baby recliners due to entrapment, suffocation and fall hazards. The product is meant for use on the floor and if used improperly, such as in a crib or other enclosed area, infants can become caught between the sides of the crib or other enclosure and suffocate. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission report, “Infants can partially fall or hang over the side of the Nap Nanny® even while the harness is in use. This situation can be worse if the Velcro™ straps, located inside the Nap Nanny® cover are not properly attached to the "D"-rings located on the foam, or if consumers are using the first generation model Nap Nanny® that was sold without "D"-rings.” Cited in 22 incidents so far, most of the injuries reported have been mild such as a cut to the forehead and bruising. However, one infant has died as a result of hanging over the side of the recliner and being trapped between the product and a crib bumper.

The Nap Nanny recliners were sold nationwide at children’s retail stores and online at www.napnanny.com from January 2009 through July 2010. Consumers should stop using this product immediately. Those with older model recliners that do not have “D” rings should contact Baby Matters for an $80 coupon towards the purchase of a new product. Those with newer recliners with “D” rings should visit the company’s website for up-to-date product instructions. The site also features an instructional video that explains how to ensure the harness is properly fastened, which has been added to this article for your convenience.

Baby Matters LLC, can be reached toll-free at (888) 240-4282 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday or via their website at www.napnanny.com/recall.
